New sites

The summer program of UBC is packed with activities: artefact processing, database recording, soil sampling, conference participation... We also conduct archive research and prepare for the next archaeological surveys!

For this purpose, on the afternoon of July 19, 2023, we made a short visit to one of our colleagues: Leopold Toriser (known to a broader audience through the radio program "The Magic Eye" and his performances as a cabaret artist). He is not only sorting through several archaeological repositories in Laa an der Thaya, but also possesses a lot of insider information about local archaeological sites.

As some of these are part of the UBC project region, he first showed us through one of the find depots in a building historically used as a grain silo. There, we examined some exciting Early Neolithic finds, which require further analysis for accurate identification.

Afterward, he guided us to a scarcely known LBK site, whose location has not yet been published within the literature. It adds not only another line to the site-database of UBC – the new site also fills a gap within our distribution map, which is why we definitely want to investigate it with a systematic survey. Already from the edge of the field a scatter of finds could be seen that indicates that at least one phase of the site dates to the younger Linear Pottery Culture!
